We've decided to Elope! now what?

Planning an elopement is an exciting and intimate way to celebrate your love. It allows you to focus on what truly matters to you and your partner, without the pressures of a traditional wedding. Whether you're drawn to stunning landscapes, adventurous activities, or simply want a quiet ceremony, here's a guide to help you get started on planning your dream elopement.

Deciding on the Location

The first step in planning your elopement is choosing the perfect location. Consider what inspires you and your partner. Are you drawn to breathtaking mountain vistas, serene beaches, or charming cityscapes? Think about what kind of setting resonates with you both. Perhaps you saw photos that inspired you, or you're both passionate about the outdoors. Consider your preferences for weather as well. Do you prefer hot weather or do you find beauty in stormy weather? (But be ready for both - outdoor weddings are always unpredictable, and eloping does require some amount of flexibility).

Research Permits and Regulations

Before finalizing your location, research the permits and regulations required for ceremonies in that area. Ensure that ceremonies are allowed and check for any restrictions or wait times. Some locations require advance booking or have limited availability, so it's important to plan accordingly.

Obtaining Your Marriage License

Getting your marriage license is a crucial step in the elopement planning process. While it can be tempting to obtain your license abroad, it's often more complicated than getting married in your home state. Consider formalizing your marriage in your home state before your ceremony, especially if you plan to have your elopement elsewhere.

Choosing Activities

One of the perks of eloping is the freedom to choose activities that excite you. Whether you dream of riding a helicopter to a glacier peak in Alaska or prefer whiskey tasting and cozying up by the fire in Ireland, the choice is yours. Consider what activities you both enjoy and tailor your elopement to reflect your shared interests.

Creating a Detailed Spreadsheet

To stay organized, start a spreadsheet with all the details of your elopement. Include tasks such as lining up catering, choosing your photographer, applying for permits, buying flights, and sending invites. Assign a due date and cost to each task to keep track of your budget and timeline. If you need help, let me know! I love building out checklists and workback timelines with my clients.

Prioritizing Costs

Decide what aspects of your elopement are most important to you and your partner. Whether it's professional hair and makeup, a stunning venue, or top-notch photography, prioritize the elements that you refuse to compromise on. Be prepared to adjust your budget for these priorities while remaining flexible on less important aspects.

Remember to Relax

Above all, remember that eloping is meant to be a fun and stress-free experience! If at any point the planning becomes overwhelming, take a step back and reassess. Focus on doing only what you both truly want and let go of any unnecessary stress. Your elopement is about celebrating your love in a way that feels authentic and meaningful to you both.
